Dr. Ehsan Khan (Ph.D. Ag Econ 1993) Oversees Development Efforts at the Asian Development Bank (January 2006)

It has been roughly 12 years since Dr. Ehsan Khan left Oklahoma State University with a doctoral degree in agricultural economics. He is presently a Project Economist with the Asian Development Bank and is based at the Bank’s headquarters in Manila, Philippines. As a part of the Southeast Asian Regional Department, his main responsibilities include working with the governments of Indonesia and the Philippines in bringing development to agriculture and rural sectors. This includes design and formulation of new projects, overseeing implementation of the ongoing projects, sectoral analyses, and strategy and policy analyses. As a team leader or a team member, he contributes to the design of activities focused on agricultural production and rural development. Dr. Khan was also a key member of the Asian Development Bank’s response team to the Tsunami of 26 December 2005 which caused heavy damages in as many as ten countries. As a part of the team focusing on Indonesia, the country to suffer the most devastation, his contributions included damage assessment and development of a recovery strategy for the agricultural sector, and formulation of a $32 million component for agricultural sector development in the ADB’s $320 million multi-sector rehabilitation and reconstruction initiative for Indonesia. Dr. Khan is currently overseeing the implementation of several projects in Indonesia with a combined size of roughly $300 million. These projects cover almost the entire country and support activities related to agricultural research and development, crop production, rural development, and agriculture related human resources development. Dr. Khan's major advisor in his doctoral program at Oklahoma State University was Dr. Shida Henneberry.

Dr. Terry Raney (Ph.D. in Ag Econ from OSU) is the Editor of "The State of Food and Agriculture" at the FAO in Rome (December 2005)

When the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations needed a Senior Economist and Editor for their flagship publication,The State of Food and Agriculture, they tapped Dr. Terri Raney, an OSU triple graduate. FAO's choice was validated when Dr. Raney received the American Agricultural Economics Association's 2005 Quality of Communications Award for her first issue of the report.

The State of Food and Agriculture, the oldest global report in the UN system, is published in five languages and reaches an international audience of students, researchers and policy makers. It provides comprehensive data and analysis for the food and agricultural economy at the global, regional and national level. The report also provides an analytical survey of one major topic each year. In 2004, it was Dr. Raney's award-winning survey of agricultural biotechnology and the poor. The 2005 report investigates international trade and poverty, and in 2006 the report will examine the role of food aid in supporting food security.

Dr. Raney credits her success in tackling such a diverse range of subjects to her OSU education. She received a B.A. in History and Economics, and M.S. in Economics, and a Ph.D. in Agricultural Economics. The combination of a liberal arts background, with its emphasis on critical thinking and writing, and rigorous graduate study in Agricultural Economics
has served her well, first as a faculty member at Washington State University, then as a Senior Economist with the Economic Research Service of the United States Department of Agriculture and finally with the Food and Agriculture Organization.
