Caroilina Sanchez of UPAEP Completes Visiting Scholar Position at Oklahoma State University (June 2007)
Carolina Sanchez of UPAEP in Puebla, Mexico has completed a visiting scholar position in the Department of Entomology at Oklahoma State University. During her stay at Oklahoma State, Ms. Sanchez studied insects using the catalog and resources available in the Department of Entomology. She has completed a large document profiling the identification work she has completed. This material will be incorporated into her classroom lectures at UPAEP for the benefit of future generations of students in the Agriculture program at UPAEP in Puebla. Everyone who worked with Ms. Sanchez truly appreciated her dedication and professionalism. Congratulations to Carolina on the completion of this important experience.
Dr. Schnelle Teaches short Course in Turkmenistan (June 2007)
Dr. Mike Schnelle taught greenhouse management in Atrek, Turkmenistan from 4 June – 16 June 2007. His students were primarily female farmers interested in alternative crops. This course took place near to the Iranian border, in a relatively remote area. In the photo above, Dr. Schnelle meets with his students.

OSU Access Tours is Success - Thai Doctoral Students Participate (June 2007)

The Oklahoma Access Tour, sponsored by DASNR, was once again a great way for OSU to reach out to Oklahoma agriculture. This year, a group of Doctoral students in the Ag Ed Department's cohort doctoral program with Chiang Mai University in Thailand participated in the tour. OSU Mexican Students Celebrate Easter with Dr. Fabreagas (Spring 2007)
Doctor Lupita Fabregas, a professor from UPAEP in Puebla, Mexico who is currently working at OSU, continued her tradition of opening her home to Mexican students during the holidays. Oklahoma State Study Abroad Group Visits China and Tibet (May 2007)

OSU Study Abroad in China 2007 had a fantastic evening in Tibet (photo above provided by Danny Darnell). The OSU China Study Abroad Course visited The Tibet Academy of Agricultural and Animal Sciences and viewed their experimetnal greenhouses on May 15th. Dr Tashi (photo above, in the orange tie) is Director General of Tibet Agriculture Research Institute of TAAAS.
Open House held for Students of Honduras Study Abroad Program (April 2007)
Dr. Thomas Kuzmic and the Department of Forestry held an open house for the students who participated in the Honduras study abroad program over spring break to display their course projects.

DASNR Holds Luncheon to Honor Graduating International Students (April 2007)
On April 19, 2007 DASNR faculty and administration gathered in the Taylor Room to participate in a luncheon honoring the graduating international students in agriculture. These students will enter their professions having not only completed a graduate program, but having done so despite the challenges of living and working in another country and in many cases, another language.

Agustin Landa of UPAEP Visits Division of Agriculture at Oklahoma State University to Provide Information to Students Enrolled in the Intensive Spanish Language Program (April 2007)

Rector Daniel Garcia-Coello of Universidad Regional del Norte in Chihuahua will visit Oklahoma State University (April 2007)
The Rector of one of Chihuahua's most pretigious private educational institutions will be signing a Reciprocal Exchange Agreement with Oklahoma State University. This will provide opportunities for URN students to visit Oklahoma State University and for OSU students to spend a semester at URN in Chihuahua. The Northern Regional University (URN) was founded on November 5th, 1988, according to the guidance and acknowledge of the Formal Directive and Board Council of “PROMOTORES MEXICANOS DE LA EDUCACION”. After obtained its state and national recognition, as a regional institution, its certification was held on the Nº 3 Decreed issued by the Constitutional Government of the State of Chihuahua, published in the Official Confederacy Journal on February 16, 1991 URN is a private institution that owns a unique innovative way to educate, oriented to develop people efficiency under the INTEGRA system, this model assists also to increase the professional performance of students, according to specific areas in addition of some other possible knowledge modalities. With more than 5000 students, the educational model created by the university, leads a whole system of education based on the integral information of the individual for what it has been named INTEGRA, with the intention to simplify the learning process and to turn up the academic aspect in order to finally furnish several high educated students. URN has Bachelor degrees in: International Business, Communications, Law, International Comerce, Tourism, Business management, Finance, Accounting, Graphic design, and Engineering production.
Russian Agriculturalists Participate in Training Program at Oklahoma State University (April 2007)
The Tulsa Global Alliance led a group a agriculturalists from Russia to attend a short training program at Oklahoma State University. Bob Leiser, Vice-President for Programming of the Tulsa Global Alliance, has brought several delagations to the OSU campus in the past. Drs. Kim Anderson and Mike Woods of the Department of Agricultural Economics provided lectures to the group (photos below), and International Agricultural Programs hosted a luncheon in the student cafeterias at noon.

Dr. Salim Hiziroglu Completes Memorandum of Understanding for OSU at Bogor University in Indonesia (January 2007)
Dr. Salim Hiziroglu, on right above, is shown meeting with the President of Bogor University in Indonesia, where he completed a Memorandum of Understanding for Oklahoma State University. In the photo below, Dr. Hiziroglu (rear, center) is shown with the Dean of Forestry at Bogor University. Dr. Hiziroglu is a Professor of Forestry at Oklahoma State University with a specialization in wood products. He is currently on a one year international sabbatical. Dr. Hiziroglu's work has been highly regarded internationally.

IFSA Foundation Spanish Language Scholarships Available (January2007)
NEWS RELEASE
Oklahoma State University has received a $90,000 grant from the Institute for Study Abroad Foundation, to fund a program over the next three years promoting the study of agriculture and natural resources in Mexico. The funding provides scholarships to qualified students to cover most of the cost for a five week intensive Spanish language immersion program at the Universidad Popular Autonoma del Estado de Puebla (UPAEP) in Puebla, Mexico followed by a one week field experience in the surrounding region. Seven $2,500 scholarships are available for the summer program which is scheduled from May 20 through July 1, 2007. Additional scholarships will be offered to students from the summer program who elect to continue their studies for a longer term one semester reciprocal exchange. The goal of the program is to encourage students to study abroad for longer periods by first providing a structured short-term experience, then offering a semester long option that provides greater cultural immersion.
An information session describing the program is scheduled for Thursday, February 8, 2007 in 410 Ag Hall at 7:00 p.m.
Applications for the scholarships and summer program are available by contacting Dr. Henneberry at 139 Ag Hall or e-mailing David. Henneberry@okstate.edu. Additional information about the program is available from the program website, from the Office of International Programs in Agriculture, 139 Agricultural Hall, 744-4398; from the UPAEP Liaison Office, 204 Watkins Center, 744-5342 or from the Study Abroad Office, 060-G Student Union, 744-8569. Applicants must have completed 45 hours of academic credit and hold a 2.5 GPA. Recipients of the scholarship must enroll in six credit hours of AG 3080 Intensive Spanish Language Program for Agribusiness Managers. Applications and supporting documents should be submitted to Dr. Henneberry by Thursday, February 15, 2007.
Staff and faculty from the College of Agricultural Science and Natural Resources, and the Office of International Programs in Agriculture, collaborated with the School of International Studies and its Study Abroad Office to developed the proposal which was submitted in September 2006. Dr. David Henneberry, Director of International Programs in Agriculture is designated as the Principal Investigator for the program.
The IFSA Foundation was established promote international education by providing financial assistance to US colleges and universities to support undergraduate study abroad. The Foundation states that it favors proposals that promote semester and year-long study academically integrated with recognized universities abroad, providing “scholarship aid to extend opportunities, particularly to underrepresented groups; start-up support for underdeveloped areas, geographic or disciplinary, …and support for innovative projects designed to broaden the scope of the undergraduate study abroad experience.”
The Autonomous University of Chapingo visits CASNR to plan 2007 Reverse Study Abroad Program (January 2007)
Facundo Garcia, Rayond Gomez and Diana Reina of the Autonomous University of Chapingo visited CASNR to plan a reverse study abroad program for the summer of 2007. Under this program, approximately 90-100 students from Chapingo will come to Oklahoma State University to take a course on Oklahoma livestock agriculture to be offered by Dr. Derrell Peel of the Department of Agricultural Economics, with assistance from other OSU faculty. The course will take place June 24-30, 2007.

Belaynesh Zevadia, Deputy Consul General of Israel, Discusses Programs with the Department of Plant and Soil Sciences and DASNR (January 2007)
Dr. Jim Stiegler of the Department of Plant and Soil Sciences arranged a visit to OSU by Belaynesh Zevadia, the Deputy consul General of Israel, on January 8th. Dr. Stielger visited Israel with a group of Oklahoma agribusinesses a few years ago, and has been active in promoting relationships between Oklahoma agriculture and Israel. Belaynesh Zevadia assumed her duties in August 2005 as Deputy Consul General of Israel to the Southwest, based in Houston. Born in the Ambovar village in the Gondar region of Ethiopia, she immigrated to Israel in 1984. Deputy Consul General Zevadia joined Israel’s Foreign Ministry in 1993, becoming the first Ethiopian woman in the Israeli Diplomatic Service. She previously served as Consul of Israel to the Midwest ( Chicago) from 1996 until 2002. While serving in Chicago, Zevadia was awarded the prestigious Kizze Prize for being a positive role model, and was also honored with the Black History Month’s plaque for contributions towards race relations. Prior to her most recent appointment as Deputy Consul General, Belaynesh Zevadia served as a Counselor in the Religious Affairs Bureau at the Israeli Foreign Ministry in Jerusalem. She also served briefly in the Israeli Delegation to the United Nations. Zevadia earned her BA in International Relations and African Studies, and her MA in Anthropology and African Studies from the Hebrew University in Jerusalem. She is married, and has a daughter.
