OSU Study Abroad Fair Held on October 5th the OSU Student Union (October 2005)

The annual study abroad fair was held in the atrium of the OSU student union on Wednesday, October 5th, 2005. The study abroad fair is a time when students can come to learn about all of the international study opportunities offered by the various colleges and the study abroad office at OSU. It is an event staged like a fair, with booths presenting information on the various programs. This year, the College of Agriculture provided information to students on courses in Thailand, China, Honduras, England, Italy, Japan, Peru, and Mexico.
Prof. Edgar Hermosillo from the University of Chihuahua Visits Oklahoma State University to Discuss Cohort Doctoral Program (October 2005)
Edgar Hermosillo from the University of Chihuahua visited OKlahoma Stqate University October 5-8, 2005 to discuss the cohort doctoral program. During his visit he met with Dr. David Henneberry, program dierctor; Dr. Bailey Norwood, Department of Agricultural Economics; Dr. Robert Nolan, Department of Higher Education Administration and others. The objective of the visit was to plan the doctoral program he plans to initiate at OSU. Prof. Hermosillo has worked with OSU projects for several years, including student exchange programs, study abroad courses, industry seminar programs in Chihuahua as well as the cohort doctoral program.

Oklahoma Farm Bureau Hosts Tour of Oklahoma Agriculture for International Students (September 2005)

Every year the Oklahoma Farm Bureau treats OSU's international students to a free weekend tour of Oklahoma agriculture. Please join us over Fall Break. Dr. Shida Henneberry and Joao Mutondo present an international seminar at the USDA (September 2005)
"Global Demand for U.S. Meats: A Source Differentiated Market Study of Canada, Japan, Korea and Mexico," is the title of a seminar to be presented by Shida Henneberry and Joao Mutondo (Professor and Graduate Research Assistant, Department of Agricultural Economics, Oklahoma State University) on Friday, September 30, 2005 in the Natural Resources and Environment Room of the Markets Trade and Economics Development Group at the USDA. The topic is of interest to the USDA. Elasticity estimates are critical parameters in determining the impact of U.S. domestic policies, such as country of origin labeling. However, the published estimates of import demand elasticities for some of the major importers of U.S. meats are limited to a few studies, which have in most part concentrated on Japan. This seminar provides elasticity estimates for four major export markets for U.S. produced meats: Canada, Japan, Korea, and Mexico, using a Restricted Source Differentiated Almost Ideal Demand System (RSAIDS) model.,
FAS USDA Civil Rights Compliance Review Conducted at DASNR (September 2005)
The Foreign Agricultural Service - USDA conducted a Civil Rights Compliance review of DASNR programs September 21-23, 2005 on the Oklahoma State University campus. Mr. Valentine Thompson, Equal Opportunity Specialist, conducted the review interviews. Mr. Thompson met with the Assistant Dean for International Agricultural Programs, the Study Abroad Program Coordinator, the Grants and Contracts Administrator of DASNR, the Human Resources Specialist, the Director of Affirmative Action for OSU, the Vice-President for Institutional Diversity, and four graduate students and four faculty. OSU looks forward to receiving the compliance report in the future.
Dr. Pongsak Angkasith Honored in Conoco-Phillips Alumni Center (September 2005)
Dr. Pongsak Angkasith, an alumni of the Department of Agricultural Education at OSU and the President of Chiang Mai University in Thailand, is honored in a display at the Conoco Phillips Alumni Center. Dr. Angkasith received the distinguished international alumni award from Oklahoma State University in 2004 and this honor is featured in the main lobby of the new buiilding. Chiang Mai University has assisted with CASNR's study abroad course in Thailand for the past two years and is initiating a cohort doctoral program with the Department of Agricultural Education at OSU. Dr. Angkasith has been active in the OSU alumni association in Thailand.
Dr. Charles Leider Appointed to United Nations Committee on Monuments and Sites (September 2005)
The American Society of Landscape Architects has reappointed Dr. Charles Leider as ASLA's representative to the Board of Directors of U.S. International Committee on Monuments and Sites, (US/ICOMOS). US/ICOMOS is part of United Nation's UNESCO's international organization for over 50 countries world wide. Dr. Leider was also reelected chairman of the US/ICOMOS's Scientific Committee on Historic Gardens and Cultural Landscapes. Dr. Charles Leider presented a paper on Stimulating Local Economies through Tourism to Historic Landscapes at the Annual Conference of the International Federation of Landscape Architects (IFLA) at Heriott Wyatt University in Edinburgh, Scotland in June 2005.
Peru Study Abroad Program Continues A History of Successful Student Exchanges, and Program Expands to Include UNAM in Mexico (September 2005)
Dr. Charles Leider and Professor Michael Holmes led OSU students to Peru for a three week Studio Exchange Program with UPC Architecture Program in Lima in May 2005. Dr. Leider arranged for the Landscape Architecture students and faculty from Landscape Architecture Program of UNAM in Mexico City to join the group in Lima to study with the OSU and UPC Architecture students. He had previously met the UNAM faculty and students through the LSU Luis Barragan Studio in Mexico City during summer of 2003. All the students in the program participated in a field trip to Pre Columbian archeological sites in northern Peru, and course work which included outdoor sketching, earthen architecture, studio project, and tour of built works in Lima, Cusco, and Machu Picchu. In February 2006 the UPC and UNAM students and faculty plan to come to the OSU to work with the 4th year LA students on month long studio exchange projects followed by a return visit to Peru in May 2006.
OSU Signs Memorandum of Understanding with Khon Kaen University of Thailand (September 2005)
Oklahoma State University has signed a Memorandum of Understanding with Khon Kaen University of Thailand. This MOU was initiated by Dr. Juntanee Uriyapongsan, the Head of the Department of Food Technology at KKU. The MOU has been signed by President Sumon Sakolchai of KKU and will be the foundation for projects that OSU's food science and technology researchers have in collaboration with those at KKU. Khon Kaen University (KKU) was one of four regional universities established in 1964 as part of a decentralized development plan for higher education in Thailand. The campus is located in the Northwestern sector of Khon Kaen, just a few kilometers from the center of the city. Situated in an attractive park, the campus covers approximately 900 hectares. From small beginnings, KKU has grown enormously and is today home to seventeen faculties, three academic support centers, 2 academic service centers, a hospital and a research institute
Ag Roundup A Great Venue To Learn About Study Abroad
(September 2005)

The International Ag Programs Office had a booth at the Ag Roundup and over 30 students signed up to receive more information on study abroad programs at Oklahoma State University. Their names and e-mail addresses have been provided to the faculty members leading study abroad courses and the students will receive contact directly from those faculty members. The interest at this year's booth was larger than ever before and students are showing more awareness of the importance of international issues in their academic development. Dr. Robert Terry to Present Seminars at Maejo University of Thailand (September 2005)

Dr. Robert Terry, Professor Emeritus of the Agricultural Education Department at OSU, will travel to Thailand in September 2005 to present two seminars at Maejo University in Chiang Mai. Shown meeting with Dr. Terry in his home to plan the seminars are two representatives from Maejo University, Ms. Maria Diana Jantakad (Director of International Programs) and Ms. Chaowana Phetcharet (Department of Economics). The President of Maejo University, Dr. Thep Phongparnich, is an alumni of the Department of Agricultural Education at Oklahoma State UNiversity.
Agricultural Economics Department Will Hold Annual International Potluck Dinner on September 24th, 2005
The Department of Agricultural Economics will hold its international potluck dinner on Saturday September 24th at 6:00 pm in the Atrium of the Noble Research Center. Faculty, staff and students in the Department of Agricultural Economics are welcome to attend. Everyone brings a dish from their country of origin and the food is served in a buffet setting. This is one of the best social events that the Agricultural Economics Department holds every year and is a great place to forge new friendships in an international setting. Dr. Brad Morgan receives teaching award from the International Congress of Meat Science (September 2005)
Dr. Brad Morgan of the Animal Science Department at Oklahoma State University was recently recognized by the International Congress of Meat Science and
Technology. Dr. Morgan was presented the Distinguished Teaching Award at the annual meeting in Baltimore. The award was designed to recognize excellence in teaching of graduate and undergraduate meat science courses. Dr. Morgan has been at Oklahoma State University since 1995 and has advised 32 Master of Science students and seven doctoral students. Dr. Morgan has also developed the Meat Industry Study Tour to expose students to the meats industry. Dr. Morgan takes 18-22 students on the meats industry study tour visiting many industry sites.
Dr. Jean Marie Verchot-Lubicz and Ho-Jong Ju will attend the International Society of Plant Microbe Interactions meeting in Cancun, Mexico (September 2005)

Dr. Jean Marie Verchot-Lubicz and Ho-Jong Ju will attend the International Society of Plant Microbe Interactions meeting in Cancun, Mexico. The travel is partly funded by a Bionet Award. The International Society of Molecular Plant-Microbe Interactions has members from 30 countries and offices in the United States and Belgium.
IS-MPMI meetings take place
every two years in different locations. To date, meetings have been held in
Canada, Germany, Mexico, Scotland, Switzerland, the Netherlands, and the United
States.

Dr. Tom Phillips participates in Doctoral Defense in the Department of Ecology at Lund University in Lund, Sweden (September 2005)
Dr. Tom Phillips will be serving as the faculty
opponent in a doctoral defense at Lund University in Sweden. Professor Olle Anderbrant has invited Dr. Phillips to put the research into a broader perspective, pointing out what is new and important in this particular field of investigation. The doctoral defense also includes a dialog with the opponent and responder covering various aspects of the research in question. Dr. Phiillips will also present a seminar while at Lund University. Lund University is the largest unit for research and higher education in Sweden. The University has about 41,000 students in total, with 6,500 studying at graduate level, and 3,000 as research students.
OSU Signs Memorandum of Understanding with University of Milan (September 2005)
Oklahoma State University has signed a Memorandum of Understanding with the University of Milan. This agreement will serve as a basis for enhanced research and teaching cooperation between the two institutions. The agreement was spearheaded by Dr. Leon J. Spicer, a Professor in the Department of Animal Science within the Division of Agricultural Sciences and Natural Resources at OSU and Dr. Francesca Caloni, a Professor in the Department of Veterinary Sciences and Technologies for Food Safety at the University
of Milan, Milan, Italy. Drs. Spicer and Caloni have been collaborating on a joint research project since 2004 and plan to continue collaborations into the future. A 3-month visit by a graduate student from the University of Milan was facilitated by this collaboration.
Derejee Demissee Jima completes internship with Dr. Ulrich Melcher (September 2005)
Dereje Demissie Jima completed a four month internship this spring and summer to complete the requirements for a M.S. degree in Bioinformatics from the University of Wageningen in the Netherlands. Dereje worked in the plant virus evolution group of Ulrich Melcher in the Biochemistry and Molecular Biology Department. He arranged the transfer of information about isolates of viruses from the National Center for Biological Information databases to the database of the International Committee for the Taxonomy of Viruses. Dereje is a native of Ethiopia.

Ms. Chaowana Phetcharat, Agricultural Economist, Visits OSU's Department of Agricultural as a Visiting Scholar from Maejo University in Thailand (August 2006)
Ms. Chaowana Phetcharet from Maejo University in Thailand will visit the Department of Agricultural Economics at Oklahoma State University as a visiting scholar. She will be working with Dr. Shida Henneberry on international trade and development issues related to Southeast Asia. Ms. Phetcharet was selected for this honor as part of Maejo University's 70th anniversary celebration, which includes an academic strengthening program. Through her stay at OSU as a visiting scholar, she will develop working relationships with OSU faculty, plan for research on topics where U.S. and Thai interests overlap, and strengthen her academic skills by auditing a course. She began her stay at OSU on August 30th, 2005.
Myeong Eun Kim of Konkuk University in Korea Visits OSU Forestry Department as a Visiting Scholar (August 2005)

Myeong Eun Kim of Konkuk University in Korea is visiting the Department of Forestry at Oklahoma State University as a visiting scholar. While on the OSU campus, she will be taking courses related to her academic areas of interest including Dendrology, Forest Recreation, and Forest Resources. Ms. Kim also has an active interest in music and is a studying piano.
OSU Student Senator Tim Collver to spend summer 2006 at Maejo University in Thailand (August 2005)
Tim Collver, who first visited Thailand as part of an argiculture study abroad course in January 2005, will be spending the summer of 2006 at Maejo University as an intern in the Department of Computer Science. His supervisors on the Maejo University campus will be Ms. Chalitda Wongsathan and Mr. Damkerng Chamnanca (the Associate Dean for Planning). This activity is under the provisions of the Memorandum of Understanding signed between Oklahoma State University and Maejo University on April 23rd, 2004. During Tim's stay on the Maejo University campus, he will participate in many 70th anniversary activities that the University has planned for 2006. Tim Collver is a senator in OSU student government and spent the summer working in the outback as a counselor at the Philmont Boy Scout Ranch in Cimarron, New Mexico.
The International Friendship Committee of Stillwater Sponsors International Hospitality Day for OSU's International Students (August 2005)

The City of Stillwater is inviting OSU's international students to join a Stillwater resident for Saturday lunch and afternoon activities on September 24, 2005. This day has been designated as International Student Hospitality Day. Students and hosts will meet in the great room of the Family Resource Center at 719 North Walnut at 11:00 am in the University apartments area. Dress is casual. The hosts are residents of Stillwater who enjoy meeting international students and who would like to show others some aspect of Stillwater and the surrounding areas. Hosts range from families with children to single individuals.

Dr. Bob Wetteman and Dr. Gerald Horn Featured at Congress in Argentina (August 2005)

Dr. Bob Wetteman and Dr. Gerald Horn will present papers at the 28th Congress of the Argentine Association of Animal Production in October 2005. They have been invited to speak at this Congress and to collaborate with faculty at the Unviersidad Nacional del Sur in Argentina. Presentation of papers at an International Congress frequently results in graduate program applications because of the increased visibility of OSU programs.
