Programa de Capacitacion en Desarollo Ganadero
Para El Estado de Chihuahua

or the

Chihuahuan Cattlemen of Excellence Program

In the spring of 2006, five institutions came together to develop a program that would provide both technical training and inspiration to the young cattlemen of Chihuahua. These institutions are the:

Secretariat of Rural Development of the State of Chihuahua; the

Regional Cattlemen's Union of Chihuahua; the

Fundacion Produce; the

The Department of Zootecnia at the University of Chihuahua; and the

Division of Agriculture at Oklahoma State University.

These institutions already have a solid history of productive collaboration including a joint doctoral program in animal science, conferences, study abroad courses, a USAID proposal, faculty sabbaticals and joint research. In this program, the resources of these institutions will be focused on providing both training and inspiration to young Chihuahuan Cattlemen from the region of Namiquipa.

The grazing and feeding of cattle is a noble occupation, with a long history in both Oklahoma and Chihuahua. In the first part of this century, the rural populations in both states have been declining. In Chihuahua, some of the rural youth have left the country to work in the United States or in the larger cities of Mexico. In order to reverse this trend and to stimulate the rural economy of Chihuahua, this program will provide a select group of youth with an understandiing of the tremendous potential that exists within the cattle industry. It will provide both the technical skills and inspiration needed to open up the world view of the participants and improve the cattle industry in rural Chihuahua.

In the first phase of this program, ten youth have been selected to participate in four separate training segments at Oklahoma State University. Click here to view a copy of the application form for this program. These will not be classroom lectures, but a hands-on, guided experience that will expose them to the best that the cattle industry has to offer. Each training segment will be 10 days long and all four segments will be completed within a one-year time frame.
