Philippines
The Philippines is a major U.S. trading partner and a strategic friend on the periphery of continental Asia.
The Republic of the Philippines is an independent republic that consists of over 7,100 islands nestled in the western Pacific Ocean. There are two large islands that encompass the many smaller ones in between: Luzon to the north, Mindanao to the south.
The islands are predominately a mountainous terrain. The highest point on Luzon is Mount Pulog (9,626 feet above sea level) and Mount Apo (9,692 feet above sea level) on Mindanao. The mountains are part of a group of volcanoes around the Pacific Ocean called the circum-Pacific volcanic belt.
