Home Country: Germany

Germany, officially the Federal Republic of Germany, is a country in Central Europe. It is bordered to the north by the North Sea, Denmark, and the Baltic Sea, to the east by Poland and the Czech Republic, to the south by Austria and Switzerland, and to the west by France, Luxembourg, Belgium and the Netherlands. Within its borders are a portion of the Alps, the famous Rhine and Danube rivers, and the Black Forest. Its capital is Berlin; many of the governmental institutions, ministries as well as embassies were moved to Berlin from Bonn (now Federal City of Bonn), the former capital of West Germany, in 1999.

Germany is a democratic parliamentary federal republic, made up of 16 states (Länder), which in certain spheres act independently of the federation. Historically consisting of several sovereign states with their own history, distinct German tribe dialects, culture and religious beliefs, Germany was unified as a nation state amidst the Franco-Prussian War in 1871.

The Federal Republic of Germany is a member state of the United Nations, NATO, the G8 and the G4 nations, and is a founding member of the European Union. It is the European Union's most populous and most economically powerful member state. Source: Wikipedia Online

From the Department of Biosystems and Agricultural Engineering...

This weeks International Student of the Week is Sabine Eichling, an exchange student from the University of Bingen in Germany who is in Stillwater for only one semester. She is in the Department of Biosystems and Agricultural Engineering. She is from Mannheim, Germany and speaks English, French and German.

In her free time she enjoys going to the gym and hanging out with her friends. She has really enjoyed her stay here at Oklahoma State University and believes she has been given the opportunity of a lifetime. She enjoys not only the American culture but also all of the other different cultures that are represented here on the OSU campus. She has also had the chance to go to Ukraine for an internship and loves to travel to foreign countries.

Sabine came to the United States not only to grasp a better understanding of the English language and vocabulary, but also to utilize all of the technology offered here in the US to take it back to her own country and establish it over there. She came to OSU because the University of Bingen and OSU have a great exchange program which makes it easier and cheaper for the students to come here and study.

Her future plans include going back to Germany to get her diploma and then would like to get a job working with pharmaceuticals. Her mother happens to be a pharmacist and her brother and dad are mechanical engineers in Germany.

Some words of advice she would give to other students only studying here for a semester is do not get a meal plan, she said that you will not use all of the money and they will not give it back. “I have really enjoyed all of the school spirit and activities that OSU has,” said Eichling.

Her advisor is Dr. Wilkins
